Laser treatments use an infrared light that is absorbed by the follicles. The light is turned into heat, which damages the follicles to reduce the amount of hair. The hair “sheds” after one or two weeks, leaving the area smooth, with no down time. Some people notice some redness and bumpiness immediately after treatment, but that is quickly gone in an hour.
The face needs to be re-treated after a month, and the areas of the body need to be re-treated after six weeks. Touch-ups are always required on the face (after the required 5 to 6 treatments) due to the hormones that influence hair growth. Areas of the body do not need as many touch ups, after the required 5 to 6 treatments.
Laser is usually for large treatment areas such as face, underarms, arms, bikini line, breasts, abdomen, bikini line, lower back, legs. Men commonly seek treatment for back.
We use a medical grade laser (ND:YAG), making is safe for tanned skin. The hand piece is cold as it glides along the skin, keeping the treatment area comfortable. We also use ice packs for before, during and after the treatments, as the skin gets warm.
Who is suitable?
The number of treatments varies with each individual, depending on such factors as color of hair (black is best). The best results are obtained when the skin is light, and the hair is black. Brown hair does less well, and red, blonde, and white not at all.
Several treatments are required at the start of laser therapy because of the growth cycle of the hair follicles. Each hair follicle goes through growing and resting phases. The number of active follicles and the length of the growth phase varies. The first treatment will only damage some of the follicles. After a few weeks, previously resting follicles will begin growing, which then can be lasered, and repeated monthly or 6 week intervals.
What preparation is required?
There must be dark hair in the follicle, so waxing and plucking should be stopped 1- 2 weeks before your scheduled treatment. On the day of treatment you should not apply deodorant (if you are treating underarms), moisturizers or make-up(face).
What to expect after treatment?
Immediately after your treatment, the area may appear a little red and swollen, but should be gone within one hour to one day. After a week to two, you may experience what seems to be re-growth, but actually is the “shedding” of the dead hair in the follicle. HAIR IS NOT RE-GROWING!
